The new year can bring new trends and the death of old ones.
TikTok users have been quick to share their personal feelings on what trends are in and what trends are out in 2024. The trend consists of TikTok users sharing 2023 trends they want to follow into the new year and trends they think should die off in 2024.
TikTok’s new take on New Year’s resolutions has gained widespread popularity online, with users predicting what will be In and out in 2024. “I think 2024 ins and outs are fun things to see people post about, whether it’s about trends or life goals. Personally, I think daily motivations are in and self-doubting is out,” said Taila Sarmientos Van Pelt (9).
The sensational trend has taken the internet by storm, even reaching famous actors such as Renee Rapp, Avantika Vandanapu, Angourie Rice and Bebe Wood. The cast of Mean Girls (2024) shared their personal 2024 Ins and Outs on the @hodaandjenna TikTok page.
“My in this year is library cards and my out is pretending to be dumb so that you can talk to your crush,” said Rice, in a witty reference to the film’s plot.
Furthermore, a group of reality TV actors also participated in the trend. “In is accountability, out is lying,” said reality TV actress Katie Maloney from 2013 TV show Vanderpump Rules. The trend is a fun way to state your opinion, no matter who you are or what your celebrity status is.
However, the trend is not only confined to TikTok. In fact, it’s not confined to just social media either. Students at Falls Church High School have had no problem in expressing their predictions for 2024 trends, brands, and sensational products.
Whilst some enjoy the trend, others have differing opinions. “I think that the idea of ins and outs when it comes to material things isn’t a good thing to think about. It just further separates classes of people… I think ins and outs should be mindsets and actions that we take,” said Vin Watts (11)
Still, Watts expressed their personal Ins and outs regarding their mindsets and actions. “My personal ins are: nap time, taking chances, forgiveness, dressing how I want and setting boundaries. My outs are: letting people treat me less than, eating less than I need, picking school over my health, and changing myself for others,” they added.
