Tip #1: Don’t overwash your hair
Shampooing/washing less can actually help your hair retain more moisture, staying softer and healthier. However, on days you do wash, specifically using a shampoo for curly hair is the best way to go.
Tip #2: Use natural oils
Using natural oils such as jojoba and coconut oil can help your hair greatly. Doing this can help strengthen your curls, smooth your hair cuticles, prevent breakage and promote hair growth. All of this can also reduce frizz and provide more definition for your curl pattern.
Tip #3: Diffuse instead of air drying
Diffusing is a way to blow dry your hair. Diffusers are blow dryers that come with a spikey attachment which helps spread airstream over a wider area in a more controlled way. Diffusing can be faster, more effective with volume and can give longevity to your style. Although, heat damage may come with this, so make sure to use a heat protectant beforehand.
Tip #4: Deep conditioning
Curly hair naturally requires more moisture than straight hair. Due to this, you can try using a hair mask or a deep conditioner in the shower to help maintain your natural hair.
Tip #5: Scrunch your curls
Scrunching adds volume and definition to your hair. To scrunch, cup your hair in the palm of your hand and scrunch upward, working styling products in your hair. This also helps reduce frizz.
Tip #6: Trim your hair
This goes for anybody, but trimming your hair helps remove the dead ends of your hair. The ends of your hair are the thinnest and driest parts. Doing this can remove split ends as well.
Tip #7: Try new things
Altering your curly hair routine and being open to new things can help you immensely with having great hair. No matter what, you will always find a better routine, trick, hack, etc.
Tip #8: Separate curls
If you are looking for more volume, separating your curls after drying can give you a vast amount. You can also flip your head upside down, put oil between your fingers and massage your head for even more volume and additional shine to your curls.
Tip #9: Detangle gently
Detangle your hair gently with a wide-toothed comb and lots of leave in conditioner. Slowly start from the ends to the roots to avoid breakage and tangled hair.
Tip #10: Use the right products
Using the right products for your hair type is very important. It can be hard to find the right one, but keep trying and make sure to research beforehand. If you have wavy hair, it can tend to not hold as much product. This means using light-weight, water based products. Coily hair on the other hand can require completely different products.
