On the afternoon of October 22nd, some students organized a walkout to raise awareness of mental health and draw attention to rising concerns about emotional well-being. Students packed the Jaguar stadium as volunteer speakers raised their spirits by sharing experiences and offering support to those who need it.
Vin Watts (12), a student at Falls Church High School who has organized multiple walkouts in the previous years, took on the task of spreading mental health awareness.
“I knew the community needed one but didn’t know how to go about it,” said Watts.
Despite the event being centered around a sensitive topic, the walkout wasn’t just about highlighting problems– it also recognized support clubs.
Jessica Pham (11), co-president of Jaguars Minds Matter, expressed her stand on mental health and the role of the Jaguar Minds Matter club in promoting mental health.
“The program encourages people to take care of their mental health,” said Pham, “by allowing members to engage in fun activities, and talking about methods to relieve stress.”
Some athletes also took the initiative to recognize the significance of mental health awareness.
Kely Tellez (11), a Falls Church cheerleader, showed her support as well. Tellez believes
mental health is important because not everyone has access to mental health resources.
This walkout recognized the importance of mental health awareness and being able to reach out for help when you need it.
“It’s important to let others know that there is support to get the help they need,” said Tellez
