The dress code in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) says all students must wear shirts. However, many students feel the rule isn’t enforced the same way for everyone at sports practices. Boys are sometimes allowed to go shirtless during sports practices, while girls are told they can’t wear just a sports bra, even in similar situations.
The FCPS dress code aims to keep clothing respectful and fair for everyone. The policy around sports bras for student-athletes during practices should be reconsidered. Sports bras should be viewed as practice attire.
The Falls Church Director of Student Activities, Gregory Weisbecker, said, “Everyone has to wear a shirt and pants during sports practices except for certain sports such as the swim team.”
These rules and the way that they are being followed is discriminatory, especially for female athletes. It’s unfair that boys are allowed to bend the rules, while girls face stricter enforcement. This sparks the question of whether FCPS coaches are all aware of this rule, and if they are aware, are they planning on starting to enforce this rule.
“Yes for the most part there were probably a couple of teams that were unaware of it, but I doubt they would be surprised by it,” Weisbecker said.
For many athletes, wearing a sports bra during intense workouts is about comfort and function. Sports bras are made to allow movement and help keep athletes cool, especially in outdoor practices. The dress code bans clothing that shows undergarments but does a sports bra count as an undergarment or just sports gear? Sports bras are used for athletics and the rules should be the same as wearing sports gear, like a swimsuit. The dress code restriction on sports bras sends the wrong message, making girls feel like they’re being judged more harshly for their clothing choices. Female athletes should have the same comfort options.
All students should follow the same dress code, and sports bras should not be seen as anything more than what they are: athletic equipment. It seems changes are needed now to make sure the rules are fair and enforced.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing rules with fairness and respect, especially in schools with diverse student populations. All students want a dress code that’s fair for everyone, boys and girls alike.
