The school system should not make us come to school on ice or snow days. Even a two-hour delay doesn’t always make things safer.
The days after the snow in January were cold, miserable and just bad. However, the ice that paved the sidewalks was a danger because ice can make students slip and hit their heads. It can also cause car crashes if ice is on the road or in intersections.
Here at Falls Church, there’s more ice in the trailer section that the custodians have to de-ice with salt and sand, plus they have to move all the snow from the ramps to the trailers, so that they don’t ice over on cold mornings.
It got so bad that people couldn’t come to school because of the ice. Having only a 2 hour delay is not enough. To save the custodians extra work and to protect students and staff, FCPS should call snow days whenever conditions are icy in the morning.
