On Thursday, December 10 the Falls Church Band Department performed their second concert, the Winter Concert. Even with what little practice that they had, they still performed an amazing concert. Mr. Steven Jacoby, the director of the band department, led an amazing show, thanking and congratulating everyone for their success.

The Symphonic Band started off the night performing the two pieces, “New Millennium” and “Pevensey Castle”. The director Mr. Jacoby had initially said that “Symphonic Band has been doing a really great job this year. I can’t wait for assessments, I think that we will do a great job even though we are one of the smaller groups.”

The next to preform was the Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Ensemble is an after school activity group that gives students a chance to do something that they love and something productive with their musical skills.  This ensemble has only practiced three times, but had still managed to put on a great performance. Hopefully, next year this after school group will become more than that, but an actual in school class. “I’m proud of them to have stepped up and did this, and I’m really looking forward to working more with them.” The Jazz Ensemble had performed three songs including “God rest Ye Merry Gentleman,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and the classic Christmas song “Jingle Bell Rock.”

Next, the Wind Ensemble took the stage. This is the biggest group in the whole department. This group performed the four songs “March ‘Grandioso,’” “On a Hymn Song of Philip Bliss,” “Interstellar” featuring the pianist Jacob Gushue (11), and “Greensleeves.” One of the pieces, “Interstellar,” was to give the audience a sci-fi space sound, including lots of imagery that would thrill your imagination.

The last performance of the night was a group effort as everyone from the Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Wind Ensemble came together to perform three songs, “C’est Noel”, “Bashana Haba’ah,” and another one of the classics, “Sleigh Ride.” Not only did they perform, but the Band Alumni performed as well.  It was something of a reunion for this band, to be back where it all began at FCHS.
