Today many fans of the popular book series Harry Potter learned some tragic news. Alan Rickman has died of cancer at age 69. The news devastated the fan base of the highly acclaimed films and books, and many are tweeting their condolences.

Alan Rickman was most well known for playing Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series. Rickman had a large influence in shaping the role of the complex antagonist in many of his films. In his youth, he studied at art schools such as Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art. At this time in his life, he didn’t view acting as a stable job to support himself. He went on to open a graphic design studio with some of his friends before he decided to pursue acting professionally. His first major Hollywood role came in 1988 when he played the unforgettable villainous Hans Gruber in Die Hard with Bruce Willis. In addition to having played many classic roles in Hollywood films, one of his other ways of performing was British film and theater.

One of his most iconic and unique features was his deep trademark voice that made every line pop. Many are fooled into thinking that Rickman was a stern or bitter man based on the roles he played on screen. However, many of Alan’s colleagues say that he was actually one of the kindest and most generous actors that they have ever had the pleasure of working with.

The loss of this great actor left many of his closest collaborators shocked and devastated.

Daniel Radcliffe posted on google+: “Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I’ve ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I’m pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn’t have to do that.”

J.K. Rowling tweeted: “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.”

Although his death has caused a great deal of sadness, his legacy will live on. His films will still be enjoyed by many for generations to come, and he will be remembered as one of the most influential and talented actors ever.
