FC Wrestlers Get Ready to Hit the Mat this Winter

By Erin Rodriguez, Staff Writer

Wrestling is a physically challenging
sport that involves many different types of techniques
and skills, but this does not mean you
have to be experienced to join the Jaguar wrestling
team. Wrestlers are separated into different
weight classes, which allows for a fair match
between two wrestlers. Wrestling involves both
mental and physical discipline. Falls Church
High School provides their students with the
opportunity to further their physical abilities
to the fullest through the participation in this
unique sport. Many high schools along with
Falls Church practice folk style wrestling. It is
not very well-known compared to other sports
due to the lack of knowledge on the basics of
wrestling. Although we do not usually have a
lot of students who participate in wrestling, we
have a select group of wrestlers who are willing
to put in the extra effort.
We have had many previous regional and
state champions who were able to represent Falls
Church in many tournaments. Falls Church has
been triumphant as a team at local matches and
tournaments. Also, our wrestlers have daily, rigorous
practices, in which they prepare for tournaments
and other significant matches. Our returning
wrestlers come back with new goals and
mindsets in order to be victorious this season.
Former wrestler, Jason Sorto (11) said, “I’m
looking forward to this season, I’m excited to
meet the new members of the wrestling team.”
Just like any other sport, wrestling requires a lot
of commitment from our wrestlers because it is                                                                                                                         very time consuming. When asked why he participates
in wrestling, Elijah Rochon (10) said, “
Wrestling is my outlet, whether I’m feeling mad
or happy. It’s a way for me to demonstrate my
aggression in a positive manner.”
Unlike any other sport, wrestling involves
maintaining and cutting weight in order
to be able to participate. Not only is this a
crucial factor of wrestling, but it also allows our
wrestlers to build healthy lifestyles.
The Falls Church wrestling team has
been preparing themselves for this upcoming
season through off-season practices and open
mats. The Falls Church wrestlers show                                                                                                                               great improvement from their first season to their very
last season of wrestling. Although wrestlers compete
individually, it is still a team sport, in which
they are all in it to win it. Throughout the years,
our wrestlers have developed a love and passion
for wrestling. Falls Church High School highly
encourages people to join the wrestling team no
matter your level of experience. We are looking
forward to this upcoming season, best of luck to
this year’s set of wrestlers! which they prepare for
tournaments and other significant matches. Our
returning wrestlers come back with new goals
and mindsets in order to be victorious this season.
