Donald Trump Takes Office as 45th U.S. President

This past Friday, January 20, Barack Obama officially left the oval office to give way to President Donald J. Trump. The tradition of the inauguration in Washington D.C. dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Republican candidate won the election with 306 electoral votes, even with nearly 3 million fewer popular votes than Hillary Clinton. Seen as an upset to some, the results of the election are final and Donald Trump  has become the 45th President of the United States. Our school, as well as our country, has severely different views on our new president. Even with some unhappy people, it is an American tradition to have a peaceful transition of power. It is well known that Falls Church High School is a very diverse high school. This is one of our greatest strengths as a school, and it also leads to a range of views and opinions. Specifically, our upcoming president has dramatically split students’ opinions. For example, student Luke Strother (11) says, “I am excited for America to be great again.” As represented by our previous edition, this opinion is in the minority as Trump only won about 10% of our student poll.  On the other side of the coin, many here at Falls Church are not pleased with how the election ended. Hillary Clinton was the favorite going into election night. The student poll that we conducted before the election had over 60% of our participants in favor of Hillary Clinton. Many of those in favor of Clinton were severely opposed to Donald Trump. Alula Kinfu (11) is one of the many at Falls Church who are bothered by the results. When asked about the inauguration before it happened, he said that he “might cry” on the day Trump took office. Even with the majority of the American voters, and Falls Church students, in favor of the opposition, Donald Trump is the new President of the United States. The important thing for you to remember, whether you supported Trump’s candidacy or not, remember that there is always another election coming soon, and that it’s the best way to voice your opinion about the direction of our government.
