The Oscars: Who is up for Awards?

Everyone’s favorite award show is coming up, and while the press is gearing up, a rundown of the 2017 Oscar nominations seems well-due.

Nominated for best picture, there is Arrival, a movie about aliens arriving on Earth, and the reactions of the United States government. Fences, tells the story of an African American football player in the 1960s– a time of segregation.

Hacksaw Ridge is a film that regards a soldier during World War II, and there is Hell or High Water, tells the story of Toby and ex-con Tanner–brothers who rob branches of West Texas banks. Hidden Figures is the tale of three African-American women who deal with racism and sexism whilst working for NASA in the 1960s.

La La Land is a movie musical that tells the love story and struggle of an aspiring actor, Emma Stone, and a pianist, Ryan Gosling. Lion is about a young Indian boy who is separated by his family and raised by a foster couple in Australia. The next is Manchester by the Sea, a film that explains the story of Lee Chandler and his struggle with his family after his brother dies. Finally, there is Moonlight, that tells about a young African-American man and his struggle with poverty and drugs in modern day Miami.

Famous names nominated for best actor and actress include Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Denzel Washington (Fences), Natalie Portman (Jackie), and Emma Stone (La La Land). Both Moana, the new Disney Princess movie, and Zootopia are nominated for best animated film.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is nominated for best costume design, along with Jackie and La La Land. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from the hit movie Trolls is nominated for best original song, along with “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, and “City of Stars” from La La Land.

Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the 2017 Oscars, and they are airing on February 26th, starting at 8:30pm PST. Make sure to tune in to see the fun of the biggest awards show of the year!
