Every year goes by like a blur, and this year was no exception. With so many things that have happened in this past year, let’s recap some events that stuck out.

Last winter, around the end of January, we had an insane amount of snow. With that much snow, we were bound to have some snow days. In fact, we had almost a week’s worth of snow days. Many students waited anxiously not only for snow, but for Ryan McElveen, one of the county board members, to tweet out confirming the snow days.  However, staying home had repercussions, the school year had to be extended until June 25.

Athletes in the community were extremely saddened by the sudden passing of one of our beloved swim coaches, Clayton Joyner, who suffered a massive heart attack on April 22 and passed away two weeks later on May 5. Coach Joyner went to Falls Church High School and had been swimming for a majority of his life. He taught here as the head swim coach for three years, although he has been a coach in the Northern Virginia community for twelve years. He has made a large impact on our school and community and we are grateful for the time we had with him.

Our sports teams a had tremendous year. Our track team had an amazing run; every person made it into states. Another team that did amazing last year was our varsity football team, which had an exceptional season. With a record of seven wins and three losses, the team made it to a first-round playoff matchup with North Stafford.

One other important fact to reflect on for 2014 is that this is the completion of Mr. Yohe’s first calendar year as principal of FCHS—we think he’s doing a great job!

We hope that great things continue to happen at Falls Church in the coming year, and that 2015 is just as great (if not better than) 2014 was!
