Checking In With Falls Church High School Sports
October 25, 2016
Fall sports season is in full gear and we are ready for the wins, heartbreaks, and spec- tacular plays. We had a chance to catch up with Anthony Ponce (12), returning starter, who plays middle linebacker for the Falls Church High School Varsity football team. We asked him what the team’s goals for the season were and how they were planning to improve after a rough start in the season. “We’ve obviously had a rough start, but our main goal as a team is to get our swagger back and click so we can become conference champs and have a playoff spot.” The jaguars are coming back from a 4-6 2015 season after making back to back playoff appearances in 2013 and 2014 and they are planning on get- ting back on track after a remarkable win over Herndon HS 48-12. Running Back Dakwandre Marshall (10) rushed for over 100 yards with two touchdown catches against the Hornets. Quar- terback Lucas Saia (11), who is a returning start- er, passed for three touchdowns and rushed for two leading up to an outstanding 300+ all-pur- pose yards for the Jaguars. With many returning starters in the Jaguar football team, we plan on having a memorable season.
Getting off the field and focusing on heading to the court we talked to the girls vol- leyball captains on their goals and how they wanted their season to go. As a whole, they wanted to do better in the conference and they all had their own personal goals on this year’s season. Meaghan Wheeler (12) stated that she wants to “become a better back row player, have fun, and work hard as a team.” Susan Roda (12) would like “to be more vocal and definitely get farther in the conference with my team than we did last year.” Shannon Baily (10) said she “wants to prove all of our doubters wrong, people are saying we will not be as good as last years team but we are going to surprise you.” Whether it be personal goals, team goals, or even proving the doubters wrong, the girls Varsity volleyball team definitely has the potential to do big things with the senior leadership they have to their advan- tage this year
Heading back to the green, we talked to our golf captain Ryan Haynes (12) and Co-cap- tain Alex Bruning (11). Ryan explained that as a team “our main goal is to make regionals and in order to do that we’re going to have to work together as a team more than ever and place top 4 at districts.” Alex said that “we think we have the capability to make regionals because we have more potential than ever and the rigorous drills our coach puts us through everyday make us ready for any situation that we might see on any day on the green.” In reality, golf is one of those special sports that is more of a mental game compared to a physical game, one wrong stroke and you put yourself in a very bad posi- tion to get par. There are also so many factors that go into a stroke, whether it be the weather, the wind, or even the wet grass.
We turn the tides and head to another field to another sport that doesn’t get as much recognition because of how its past seasons have gone and its field hockey. We talked to senior captain Maddie Arman (12) on how she wanted her team’s season to go and she told us “this year our team has gotten along really well. We have bonded as a team this year more than we ever have in my past three years here at Falls Church. I really think we understand the meaning of team more than ever, and we treat each other as sisters more than just teammates. We also can all agree that our goal is to win a game, if not multi- ple this season!” The interesting thing about that goal is that, the week after we got a chance to talk to Maddie, the team went out and won their first game in two years against Thomas Jefferson overtime with a goal by Katie Ngo (11) and we hope they continue to get more spectacular wins and bounce back from two bad seasons. In addition, the Varsity Cheer team was able to accomplish one of their long time goals last year. They were able to win first place in the Confer- ence against many other high school Varsity cheer teams. By winning first place at confer- ence, they were able to represent Falls Church High School. Our Varsity cheerleading team, this accomplishment took a numerous amount of practices, effort, patience, and hard work. We hope that our Varsity cheer team is just as successful this year too! In conclusion, we are very optimistic that all of our sports here at Falls Church High School have successful seasons.
